Russia's strike on Sumy: reaction of Ukraine's ambassador to the United Kingdom

Ukraine's ambassador to the United Kingdom and former commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Valerii Zaluzhnyi addressed the public regarding the criminal strike by Russia on Sumy that occurred on Sunday, April 13. The President of Ukraine has already expressed his reaction to this cynical attack.

On this Palm Sunday, people were gathering for service when a Russian ballistic missile hit a residential quarter of the city of Sumy. Many people died, and even more were injured. Rescue operations are still ongoing. The deliberate rocket attack on civilians during a significant Christian holiday is Russia's response to all proposals for peace and ceasefire.

Today, on Palm Sunday, the Russian army launched an attack on the center of Sumy. According to reports, two powerful explosions were heard in Sumy, followed by a thick smoke rising over the city. Public transport was also damaged.

As of 15:35, it is known that as a result of the strike by Russian ballistic missiles, 32 people have died in Sumy, including two children. In addition, 99 others were injured, among them 11 children.

The use of missiles with cluster munitions was confirmed by the strike by Russia. The attack on Sumy was carried out by two ballistic missiles of the 'Iskander-M'/KN-23 type. The head of intelligence reported that the missiles were launched from the Voronezh region (the settlement of Liski) and the Kursk region (the settlement of Lezhensky).

Analyzing these events, it becomes clear that Russia continues to violate international norms and tries to undermine efforts to achieve peace in Ukraine. This strike on civilians during a Christian holiday evidences Russia's callous attitude toward human life and safety. Ukraine must continue to do everything possible in cooperation with the international community to stop aggression and establish peace in Donbas.
