Light is more expensive than in the EU: expert Popenko explains how Ukrainians overpay for electricity.


In May 2025, the weighted average price of electricity on the Ukrainian 'day-ahead' market reached 4638.31 UAH per MWh, or €98 per MWh. This was reported by energy expert Oleg Popenko on social media.

In May, electricity prices in other European countries were as follows: €94.73 per MWh in Italy, €18.21 in France, €65.85 in Germany, €15.15 in Spain, €37.98 in Sweden. Compared to April, prices in Ukraine rose only by 0.6%.
'Let them not tell you about prices in the EU, read,' noted the scholar. 'We have the highest electricity price among most European countries.'
Popenko expressed his outrage at the state of the electricity market and emphasized the need for reforms in this sector and a fight against monopolies.
