North Korea condemned the demand from G7 foreign ministers to abandon nuclear weapons and stated that it will continue to grow its arsenal. The criticism from Pyongyang regarding the G7 ministers' joint statement is driven by the call for North Korea to abandon its nuclear and missile programs and condemnation of its assistance to Russia in the war with Ukraine. North Korea asserts that developing nuclear weapons is a defense of its sovereign right.
Certain individuals stated that the G7 has become a 'nuclear criminal group' that threatens peace and security and must abandon its ambitions regarding nuclear hegemony before speaking about denuclearization and renunciation of nuclear weapons. Pyongyang emphasizes that North Korea's status as a nuclear-armed state is immutable and does not depend on recognition from the world.
North Korea has been developing nuclear weapons and cruise missiles since the 1970s. The UN has repeatedly banned North Korea from developing nuclear weapons and imposed sanctions on the country for this.
