U.S. Special Representative Keith Kellogg stated that the U.S. and the EU are prepared to impose tough sanctions against Russia if it refuses to ceasefire with Ukraine. The new restrictions will concern the Central Bank of Russia and the so-called 'shadow fleet' that transports Russian oil.
The sanctions project has been supported by more than 70 senators. It includes significant restrictions for the Russian economy, particularly through secondary tariffs for countries purchasing Russian energy resources.
'We warned President Putin about this. Listen, this is very serious. These sanctions are very serious. They are tougher than we have ever seen before. Europeans share the same view,'
Europe's Position
The new Chancellor of Germany, Friedrich Merz, and other European leaders support Ukraine and are ready for new sanctions. A final decision may be made after the negotiations in Istanbul on May 15.
