Hryvnia and the Big Mac Index - What's Wrong with the Dollar Exchange Rate in Ukraine.

Annually, The Economist publishes a ranking of overvalued and undervalued currencies using the 'Big Mac Index'. As of July 2025, the exchange rate of the dollar in Ukraine is considered to be overvalued by almost double.
This is stated on The Economist's website.
The Hryvnia Rate According to the Big Mac Index
According to the Big Mac Index, the Ukrainian hryvnia is recognized as undervalued by 47.5%. This means that the official exchange rate of 41.86 UAH/USD is undervalued compared to reality. A burger costs us 132 UAH (3.16 USD), while in the USA it costs 6.01 dollars (approximately 250 UAH).
According to the Big Mac Index, the American dollar should cost 21.96 UAH/USD to achieve purchasing power parity. Among the 'neighbors' of the hryvnia in terms of currency undervaluation are the currencies of Vietnam, Egypt, India, and others.
Recommendations for Currency Transactions
Experts provide various advice regarding currency purchases. The chief consultant at the Center for Foreign Policy Studies of the National Institute for Strategic Studies, Ivan Us, recommends choosing the dollar or euro for saving money. At the same Time, the president of the Association of Ukrainian Banks, Andriy Dubas, noted that July is the best time to buy American currency.
It is worth purchasing currency at low prices. OPDP can be a profitable tool for increasing funds.
Attention to Currency Storage
You should not keep money in easily accessible places at home, as heavily worn banknotes are typically not accepted for transactions. It is also recommended to avoid damp places for currency storage.
The Big Mac Index is an interesting way to determine the degree of overvaluation or undervaluation of currencies of countries. According to this index, it turns out that the dollar in Ukraine is overvalued, and therefore, it may be worth considering purchasing other currencies for preserving capital.
