Day of Ukrainian Statehood - how and why this holiday appeared?.

Today, July 15, Ukraine celebrates the Day of Statehood. It is not yet the most popular holiday among Ukrainians, but this does not diminish its importance.

This holiday was established four years ago, although there was an idea about the necessity of marking it in the calendar of Ukrainian holidays even earlier.

"What is this holiday? Why did it appear? What does it mean and why is the date July 15 important for some?"

The establishment of the Day of Ukrainian Statehood took place four years ago, in 2021, during the solemn events dedicated to the 30th anniversary of Ukrainian independence. It was then that the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, announced the introduction of this holiday.

"We will celebrate the Day of Ukrainian Statehood beginning with the founding of Kyiv as the capital of Kyivan Rus-Ukraine, the place where everything started".

In early June 2023, Volodymyr Zelensky submitted a draft law to the Verkhovna Rada to change three holiday dates, including the Day of Ukrainian Statehood (from July 28 to July 15). This is related to the desire to affirm significant events in the history of the nation and strengthen the national consciousness of Ukrainians.

The Day of Ukrainian Statehood is celebrated to honor the millennial history of state-building in Ukraine and to assert historical justice. This holiday is marked in memory of the beginning of the formation of Ukrainian statehood, which has its roots in the history of the founding of Kyiv and the rise of the state during the Time of Volodymyr the Great, one of the founders.

The Day of Ukrainian Statehood is an important commemorative date in the history of Ukraine, intended to strengthen national consciousness and the aspiration for independence, to honor the traditions and subjective nature of the Ukrainian people.
